Projects at ZENID
Each
year, ZENID implements around 25 - 30 projects with a range of
development partners. ZENID values this operational role, which creates
an opportunity to demonstrate the linkages between theory and practice.
ZENID draws on the rich experience gained from projects and field
operations to ensure that its training is up-to-date and grounded in
the realities of the field, and is tailored to the real needs of the people it serves. The summary below illustrates ZENID's project work.

|
|
Project purpose
This
project aims to strengthen the voice of established women's groups at a local
level in order to enhance social and political empowerment, whilst at the same time
helping women increase their access to and control over resources essential for
well-being
Makana is a flagship programme that is replacted in many locations with different donor partners, and ehich evolves in reponse to local needs.
Makana has three levels:
Level 1: Mobilising the women and building their core skills
Level 2: Claiming rights and entitlements through collective action
Level 3: Raising voice and engaging in policy and planning processes

|
Main components
Through
capacity building training, the project enhances their awareness of their
rights to include broad-based definitions of rights as citizens (and taxpayers)
to access essential services such as health, education, social security, clean
environment etc. . The project develops institutional mechanisms to allow these
empowered women activists to engage effectively with democratic and governance
systems to claim and enjoy these rights.
The
project, which targets women between 20 - 35, builds on JOHUD's women's committees but seeks to change the focus and methods of working, by promoting the identification of common cause,
collective action and an emphasis on claiming rights and entitlements.
Main objectives
To provide women
with the appropriate knowledge, skills and systems through which they can advocate
for better access to their rights and entitlements
To stimulate two-way
information flows between poor women and the providers of essential services at
community, municipal and Governorate level and thereby to promote good governance and accountability
To support collective
action initiatives which help women advocate for improved services from the
state, NGOs and the private sector
To facilitate active
monitoring of women rights at local levels through collection of gender
disaggregated data and use of this evidence to advocate for equity
To inform
policy-makers about the priority needs of poor women to tailor services to meet
their needs and to overcome obstacles to access

Main achievements
More than 250 women have been trained through Makana since it was established in 2004
Communities in Jerash, Muta'a, Mleih, Sahab, and XX have all benefitted from a culture that is more respecting of rights and entitlements
Through collective action and broadbased campaigns, women have successfully helped people pursue legitimate claims for cash assistance, welfare support, literacy classes, disability aides, improved classrooms, special needs education, better transport services, a healthier cleaner environment and similar resources.
Through involvment with Makana, women have become more aware of the basic principles of 'democracy in action' - and have engaged more effectively in local level municipal elections as candidates and as proactive voters.
