Supporting those in need
JOHUD is a people-centred
organisation that offers support to those in need. The most in need are the poor. There are an estimated million people in Jordan who live
below or just above the poverty line; that means JOHUD has a huge number of potential
clients.
Added to this, there are people who may not be cash poor,
but who are vulnerable and have a right to support. This includes people with
disabilities and their families, people
whose nationality status prevents them accessing basic services, people a
discriminated against by others, who are socially excluded, people whose voice
is not heard, or whose voice is not taken seriously and addressed. The factors leading to vulnerability
are many and complex - and so JOHUD works with a wide range of partners to
address both the symptoms and the causes of poverty, vulnerability and
exclusion.
Supporting human rights - expanding our influence
We take our guidance from the UN
conventions on human rights - that affirm that every person is born with
fundamental human rights that should be recognised, respected and upheld. Human rights
are universal, interdependent and indivisible: so when we support one group to
assert and claim their rights, it helps others to have more confidence in claiming their own
rights. In this way, the number of people who positively affect is numbered in
the tens of thousands.
Helping people claim their rights
We help solve the poor solve their
immediate problems - and so address the symptoms of poverty and exclusion. We also
try to address the root causes. This
often involves trying to influence the actions taken by institutions that
affect the well being of the poor - for example line ministries that deliver
health, welfare and education services. We help the poor to understand decision-making
processes, planning cycles and budget processes of such institutions so they can intervene in
their own interests. We involve our beneficiaries in this process, and where possible,
we place our beneficiaries in lead position, standing behind them so they can
speak out - and have their views treated with respect. .
