Governance structure
Under the chairmanship of Her Royal Highness Princess
Basma Bint Talal, the Queen Alia Social Work Competition has a higher committee
that oversees all the competition's activities. Members are selected annually
according to the topics of the competition that year.
The Higher Committee is
represented by across the board; the private and public sectors, academics,
experts and individuals.
Members of the committee are divided according to
their specialisations into sub committees, in order to provide guidance and
support for effective planning and implementation
Mechanism / Competition Process
The competition consists of 10 multiple choice
questions, covering the major themes of the respective subject. The questions
are phrased in a way that enhances awareness raising and knowledge transfer as
well as encourages participants to refer to additional education material on
the particular subject
Copies of the competition, including brochures,
posters, pamphlets, education materials are distributed to schools,
universities, governmental departments and NGOs across the Kingdom
The competition is accompanied by a number of
developmental and educational activities related to the subject of the
competition, in order to maximise outreach and increase awareness.
Competition activities include:
The development of awareness raising and educational
materials distributed nationally, free of charge in the form of brochures or
pamphlets. Minimum copies distributed amount to 500,000
Printing and distributing a variety of posters to transfer
the key messages of the subject.
Development of a 40min educational CD relating to the
topic of the competition that could be used as part of a lesson in the
classroom. Approximately 6,000 schools are reached in this activity
Conducting meetings with the volunteer teams in the
various education directorates to establish appropriate outreach mechanisms
across the country
Organising an annual art competition revolving around
the subject of the competition, targeting students between the ages of 8-12 in
the various governorates of the Kingdom.
Students are also encouraged to use the additional
educational material to help them with their artwork
Preparing a media campaign with a plan to spread
awareness about the competition utilising different media tools; daily
newspapers, magazines, TV and Radio.
Developing public service announcements to be aired
on JTV
Organising discussion sessions with the aim of
exchanging ideas and experiences between university students to enhance their
active involvement in the competition
Competition prizes
The young people compete to win prizes both cash and in-kind, which are provided by the various sponsors to the competition. Winners are announced in late December, and then receive their prizes in the final ceremony,
which is held under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint
Talal.
Assistance to people with special needs
All proceeds of the competition go towards assisting
people with special needs in underprivileged areas. The funds are distributed
through JOHUD to the special education centres managed by JOHUD. Additionally,
funds are also provided to purchase equipment for physical therapy units and to support children
in poverty.
