JOHUD is
committed to monitor its on-going work so that it keeps on track towards
strategic targets. JOHUD regularly takes time out to assess the impact of its
work - especially to ensure that the beneficiaries themselves are happy with
the results
JOHUD is interested in delivering results in the form
of positive change in the lives of our beneficiaries. This change occurs when
people gain more knowledge and skills so that they can take make more informed
decisions which enable them to improve their situation. These informed
decisions can be personal, such as choosing a career or deciding how many
children to have, or they can involve others in the community, such as
deciding how to allocate development project funds, how to interact with local
decision-makers.
At the basis of all robust decision-making is self confidence,
self esteem, and the awareness of one's rights as a citizen. Above all, JOHUD's
work seeks to strengthen this solid foundation .
Impacting on the lives
of the poor
JOHUD adopts an integrated approach
to development - tackling a wide range of causes of poverty and
inclusion.Working with the poor, JOHUD provides access to training and
skill development.
Enhancing the capacity
of organisations that serve the poor
Through JOHUD interventions, we also
hope that the external environment is also more supportive of the strategies
that the poor and marginalised adopt. For this to happen, institutions that
serve the poor also need to be more responsive to the needs of the poor. Staff
need to have better skills to deal effectively with their clients. They need to
find ways to engage with the poor and to ensure that services are targeted to
their needs. improve the services they offer and to make decisions about budget
allocations that are more fairly weighted to meet the needs and interests of
the poor.

Empowerment
in all its forms
Over the years JOHUD has
come to realise that all the focus of its work should be to empower the poor,
so that they themselves have access to, and control over, the resources that
are necessary to create a viable and sustainable livelihood.
Development is a complex
issue; no single intervention is likely to bring about long term
sustainable change.
JOHUD promotes
integrated development - and aims to empower the poor to control their own
lives.
The poor and marginalised have the right to be happy...and kids have the right to have fun

JOHUD expands the
classic paradigm:
"Give a
person a fish and they will eat for a day.....
teach them to fish and they will eat
for a lifetime."
But JOHUD knows that the above is NOT sufficient...
Because, to be
effective, you also have to address issues of:
land rights,
fishing rights,
transportation,
storage,
access to markets,
water quality,
environmental
degradation and local power relations....
especially gender relations.
