Women cooking for women -
The guests were some 300 women from
around the world, who had cycled across Lebanon,
Syria, and Jordan
to raise awareness of the need for peace in the region. Under the
organisation banner ' Follow the Women'
they arrived at Amman
Beach weary after days
out on the road. Along with another 100
supporters and well wishers, they were soon revived with the sight of fresh
apricots and strawberries, piled high like a mini-mountain to remind them of
the journey they had taken. The Kafrein ladies were there serving the food -
helping build bonds of friendship between women across cultural divides.
For the guests, this was definitely
a different kind of dinner. They sat under the stars by the Dead
Sea, eating freshly prepared food catered for by women who. like
themselves, just want to live in a world that is peaceful and secure. That's international solidarity.
For the JOHUD team this was the
moment they had been working towards for three years, as they worked together
with the Kafrein Kitchen women, helping
them set up and equip the kitchen space, organising training with chefs from
the Marriott, teaching them about food hygiene, and health and safety, enterprise management, marketing and packaging. All towards one final aim - that the women have the skills and confidence to run their own catering business. And they do.
For the women it was a moment to
remember - they managed to tackle all the logistics of cooking for 400 people,
mobilizing suppliers to donate some of the ingredients, getting the food into
refrigeration and transporting it to the Dead Sea, setting up the buffet tables
innovatively to attract the eye, and then receiving the admiring comments from
their guests. The Kafrein Kitchen is well and truly launched.
Expanding the business - Kafrein Kitchen takes off commercially
Since the event, the women have
secured many more contracts to provide food locally. Every day, they are cooking up treats for
local clients; they cater for weddings and parties, they organize buffets and
snack lunches for meetings. With their growing success, they rise in status in
the eyes of their families and community. That's women's empowerment.
