"Say
No to Violence Against Women" Campaign Launch
On
Wednesday August 20th, HRH Princess Basma added her name to the global campaign
to demand an end to all forms of violence against women. Speaking in her role
as Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM, Princess Basma welcomed Mrs. Williams-De Bruyn to this milestone
event, where women, and men, come together to publicly speak out to reject all
forms of violence against women.
HRH noted that Mrs Williams-De
Bruyn has been a lifelong champion of the cause of equality of women, and a
tireless advocate of human rights and justice. She refered to her as a "dear friend to Jordan, where she spent time from 1995 to 1998
as the wife of the late Henry De Bruyn, the first Ambassador of South Africa to
Jordan".

In her
speech in support of UNIFEM's global campaign:
"Say No to Violence Against Women". Princess Basma called for action to
end this violation of women's human rights. Alongside other women, she rang a
bell on behalf of the women who are still unable to speak out for themselves,
for fear of making the violence worse expressing her hope that "Through
our joint actions we hope they will be able to break their silence".

"Advocacy is not just about speaking: it's
about action."
"Through our united voices,
we urge governments and parliaments to take the necessary action amend laws, so
that they match our shared national aspirations for equality and justice for all,
and to allocate resources, so that these laws are respected and enforced.
"Working together, we can create the
conditions to bring violence against women to an end".
