Learning from research
JOHUD carries out qualitative and participatory research to investigate the perceptions of the poor and the realities of life at the grass-roots. JOHUD uses this data to inform its own strategy and programme decisions. By actively disseminating its research findings, JOHUD raises awareness among policy-makers and the general public that the poor themselves often hold the key to finding real solutions to the challenges of development in Jordan.

The 2004 Jordan National Human Development Report
Building Sustainable Livelihoods

JOHUD was the implementing agency for the 2004 Jordan Human Development Report: Building Sustainable Livelihoods. In the preparation of this report, JOHUD carried out extensive consultation with people in poor communities so that the analysis in the report was based in the realities of the field, and in order to provide a channel for marginalised people to advocate for policies to meet their interests.

The consultation process was the largest every carried out with poor people in Jordan, and demonstrates JOHUD's commitment to participatory research.

JOHUD used the findings of the research to inform its own strategy to implement a rights based approach to sustainable development. Throughout this website, we provide selections from the NHDR 2004 to illustrate the context for our work, and to help explain many of the strategic choices we have made.

These sections are identifiable by the use of the colours of NHDR 2004 - blue and sand.

"The Jordan 2004 National Human Development report is a successful advocacy document and an excellent tool for national policy debate. It should be used as an example of 'good practice' within the NHDR community."
