Project: Gender relations in urban communities
Project title:              Understanding gender dynamics within urban communities    
Project partners:       Beit al Bawadi and JOHUD CDCs in Sahab and Irbid
Project funders:        CIDA Gender Fund 
 
Project purpose
 
This research aims to investigate the perceptions of women and men towards changing gender relations at household / community level. The research findings will be used to inform the design of programmes that promote gender equity, especially those that aim to empower women wishing to play an enhanced role in the public sphere (economic and political life).

Primary research using qualitative and participatory approach
Recommendations for application of findings 
Main deliverable: due completion late 2008
 
The research report will cover the following areas:
 the dynamics of social relations within the family.
the perceptions and aspirations of young women and men (and how they may differ)
strategies (successful and failed) for negotiating change and achieving their potential.
the potential obstacles to women's empowermentfactors that motive men and women to broaden their perspectives on gender roles.
the influence of media on gender relations
trends in social behavior, and intergenerational perspectives
behaviors most susceptible to change and most entrenched
typical campaigns that might deliver optimal benefits for women's empowerment
typical campaigns that might produce a backlash.
the language that people use to describe their lives
the stories that they tell to characterize their situation in life
