Mobilising resources
to support the most vulnerable
In the very early years of its operation, the Fund provided immediate practical relief to those most in need. Since then, the Fund has expanded its role to promote long-term sustainable development. There will, however, always be a need for direct assistance to people living in poverty who are vulnerable to factors outside their control, such as ill-health, the loss of a breadwinner, or the loss of employment.
Through its Goodwill Campaign, JOHUD reaches out to those in most desperate need, providing immediate assistance, drawing on Islamic values of solidarity and bringing together the entire Jordanian community.
Responding to emergency needs
It’s usually the local communities themselves who draw JOHUD’s attention to the plight of those most in need. A package of immediate support is identified, tailored to meet the particular needs of the family. This can include food, money for housing, essential equipment like furniture and household goods. The community also reaches out to encourage such families to get involved in local projects, so they can draw on a network of support.
Once immediate needs are met, JOHUD’s Goodwill also provides support in the form of equipment, tools, or materials so that families can set up a micro-business that will contribute to household incomes. The Goodwill Campaign also provides scholarships to young people so that they can achieve their full potential and contribute to the community as adults. Poverty should not be a barrier to access to education.
The Campaign also provides appropriate equipment for the disabled such as wheelchairs, prosthetics and hearing aids. This support enables people with special needs to gain personal dignity and lead independent lives. Every year over 15,000 people benefit from support from Goodwill. The success of these interventions shows that people living in extreme poverty are resilient. The Goodwill Campaign helps them to regain their self-reliance.
The spirit of helping others
Goodwill is not just about money – it’s about the spirit of helping others. Thousands of people donate their time and skills for Goodwill events. Of particular importance are the free “Medical Assistance Days” where people without health insurance receive medical care and free medicines, and undergo operations. All this is made possible through the generous support of medical professionals.
The Goodwill Campaign receives valuable support from many individuals and organisations. These include government, the private sector, national and international business, as well as universities, hospitals, professional associations and the Greater Amman Municipality. HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal acts as Chairperson of the Higher Committee that oversees all the Goodwill Campaign’s activities.

Income Generating Projects
In line with the Goodwill Campaign's philosophy, "helping people help themselves" people in poverty areas are granted income generating development projects, with the aim of reducing poverty and empowering vulnerable people to come out of the poverty cycle. Beneficiaries of the Goodwill Campaign are not provided with cash, but the necessary assistance to generate income. The assistance can be in the form of business products, equipment, tools, or needed materials for their projects. Additionally, they are also provided with training on how to expand and sustain their projects. To date, the Good Will Campaign has provided 3,290 projects and benefited 16,450 people across the Kingdom. The story of Shamsiyeh, right, illustrates the impact of such a grant.
Queen Alia Social Work Competition
JOHUD also promotes the Queen Alia Social Work Competition, which mobilises funds for projects to support people with special needs.
The Jordan Alliance Against Hunger (JAAH)
JOHUD is also a leading player in the Jordan Alliance Against Hunger (JAAH). For more information about JAAH, click here.

A Goodwill income generating grant gives a family their independence
In 1999, when her father died, Shamsiyeh, her mother and two sisters were left alone without support. Shamsiyeh received a small grant from the Goodwill to set up a shop.
Through slowly investing, she expanded her business to include a gas canister agency. Now she’s recognised locally as a successful businesswoman with a thriving enterprise.
Her advice to other women:
“Do the same as me... Stand up for yourself ”
